Wexford were looking to build on their defeat of Kilkenny, while Offaly hurling was looking for some redemption following the disastrous showing of their senior side. But it was the hosts who dominated the opening half despite being reduced to 14 players after just eight minutes when corner-back Garret Foley was straight red carded following an off the ball incident.
Wexford were leading 0-3 to 0-2 at that stage with points from Aidan Nolan and two Jack Guiney frees, with Offaly having points in between through a Colm Mulrooney free and Joseph O’Connor.
Despite their numerical advantage, Offaly were unable to turn it to their advantage, as the home side took total control, particularly after Colm Mulrooney sent a kick effort in front of an open goal wide. Following two quick points from a Guiney free and Conor Devitt, it was full-forward Conor McDonald, having fielded a high ball, found the net with the aid of the boot from close in giving his side a 1-5 to 0-2 lead after 18 minutes and following Rhys Clarke’s goal they were 2-9 to 0-2 ahead at the interval.
The second half turned out to be a mere formality as the Wexford dominance continued with Guiney, Kevin Foley and Rhys Clarke all on target.
While Offaly came more into the game in the closing 10 minutes, it was a case of Wexford simply going through the motions, although the visitors did manage to pick off a total of seven minutes during that closing spell but it was never going to affect the result.
