Tipp’s bitter row rumbles on as Campbell demands apology

The prospect of a resolution in the Tipperary ladies football dispute appears increasingly remote after chairman Tommie Campbell asked players dropped by team manager John Leahy to apologise to the county board.

Tipp’s bitter row rumbles on as Campbell demands apology

Ladies Gaelic Football Association President-elect Marie Hickey and Galway’s Con Moynihan travelled to Horse and Jockey last Wednesday to try find a solution to the row that has decimated Tipp’s intermediate squad.

Leahy dropped 2013 All Star nominee Mairead Morrissey, vice-captain Jennifer Grant, Patricia Hickey, Samantha Lambert and Kelly Hackett before 14 other players removed themselves from his set-up. But Tipperary LGFA chiefs are continuing to stand firm behind former county hurling star Leahy, a former All-Ireland medallist and All-Star.

Hickey and Moynihan first met Tipp LGFA officials before separate meetings with team management, current panel members and players no longer involved under Leahy.

Campbell asked mediators to forward proposals to the player group that includes Grant and Morrissey. He wants the players who were dropped to take responsibility for articles documenting the ongoing dispute that appeared in the national media, or to find out who is responsible for relaying information to the press.

Campbell has also requested the players “provide a statement of apology in person and in writing of the untrue statements to the county board and team management”.

And in a move that will not go down well with former panellists, Campbell is also demanding a written statement of apology, stating the stories that appeared in newspapers “were untrue”.

Another element to the proposal from Campbell and his colleagues is that each player associated with these articles meet team management and discuss how to support management going forward. He then wants these agreements to be written and signed by each player, a county board representative and team management.

Campbell has also accused Morrissey, Grant, Lambert and Hackett of “bringing minors into their dispute with team management”. And he is asking that the quartet text minor players to state they will give their blessing to any player “who wants to play football with whatever Tipperary team they wish”.

Campbell also asked other players who are not on Leahy’s squad to make themselves available for a meeting with county board officials and mediators Hickey and Moynihan at the Horse and Jockey last night.
