In front of an attendance of 345, last year’s beaten provincial finalists went about their business right from the throw-in and 11 different players got themselves on the scoresheet.
David Power’s side fielded nine starters from the 2011 All-Ireland minor-winning team but, to be fair to the hosts, their prospects were hampered by the fact they’ve merely one month of training behind them.
Tipp ran up three points inside five minutes through Sean Flynn (free), Greg Henry and Michael Quinlivan. The latter, operating at No 14, ran the defence ragged for his 21-minute cameo before succumbing to injury.
Josh Keane, Quinlivan and Flynn added further points to stretch the gap to six at the close of the first quarter. The one-way traffic continued for the remainder of the half and John McGrath got in on the act and Henry added two more.
Waterford finally raised a cheer through a splendid piece of teamwork that resulted in a three-pointer for David Hallahan on 23 minutes.
Substitute Liam McGrath resumed the scoring after 24 seconds of the second period.
Jimmy Healy’s Waterford displayed their gritty qualities in trying circumstances. Senior hurling panellist Ryan Donnelly came off the bench at half-time and he applied a classy soccer-style finish low to the rigging on 34 minutes following a Seamus Keating delivery (0-10 to 2-0).
Tipperary quickly readjusted to dodge any danger. They notched six uninterrupted points — before a late Waterford flurry — to sail into a semi-final meeting with Clare next week.
