Kehoe: WIT wanted to prove everybody wrong

Outside perception of Waterford IT as virtual no-hopers ahead of the Fitzgibbon Cup weekend drove Colm Bonnar’s men to a first title success since 2008, according to corner-forward, Harry Kehoe.

Kehoe: WIT wanted to prove everybody wrong

WIT were underdogs in both their semi-final and final encounters, but came up trumps each time and Kehoe, the contributor of 2-4 over the weekend, savoured the success.

“That drove us on a little bit that no one gave us a chance,” he said. “We were 9/1 coming into this weekend, in the final we were still the outsiders despite our semi-final win. Before the final, we wondered why anyone didn’t rate us? We have county players all over the pitch. It is a nice feeling to have proven everybody wrong.

“There was a concern for the final that we mightn’t have it in the tank after the 80 tough minutes played out in the semi-final, but we didn’t talk about it. You have to stay positive. Our quarter-final went to extra-time, our semi-final went to extra-time, we had it there in the end against CIT and we kicked on with a number of points. Fitness was key and credit management for having us in such good condition.”

WIT were bound for the exit door when LIT’s Cathal McInerney kicked to the net in the final minute of their semi-final. Possession, however, was swiftly moved back up the field and Kehoe pilfered an incredible equaliser 10 seconds shy of the hooter.

“There were so many things that needed to go right for me to get that ball. In fairness to our goalkeeper Stephen O’Keefe he just shrugged off the goal and pucked it out straightaway. It was drove up the field and broke kindly to me. If I tried it 20 times, I’d miss it 19 of those 20 times. It was just one of those things, it was meant to be.

“It is hard to put this victory into words. You’d be dreaming about these days, when it happens then it is just unbelievable and it will take a few days for it to settle in and for us to really appreciate this victory. In WIT we are incredibly close. We wanted it an unbelievable amount and I think that told, we decided we weren’t going to leave without that cup.”
