UCC to appeal Cronin red

UCC officials have indicated to the GAA’s Higher Education committee they will appeal Alan Cronin’s sending-off during yesterday’s Sigerson Cup semi-final.

The Nemo Rangers player was red-carded by referee Barry Cassidy for an off-the-ball incident involving Maynooth corner-back David Hyland.

UCC are likely to lodge their objection this morning and a ruling would then be made prior to this evening’s final (6.45pm throw-in).

UCC’s Conor Cox said the dismissals of Cronin and Quinlivan galvanised the team in eking out a victory against all the odds.

“We are absolutely delighted, that was a fantastic performance, a fantastic result. It didn’t look good that we hadn’t the biggest advantage at half-time and then to go a man down made our job all the tougher.

“Then when Michael Quinlivan was dismissed most teams would have folded,” he noted.

“Billy has instilled this belief into us. He has taught us to just keep driving on, keep driving on, no matter what. That is what we did.

” If we are missing Alan for the final, we will motor on regardless,” he added.

Meanwhile, UUJ manager Adrian McGuckian downplayed his side’s favourites tag ahead of this evening’s decider and expects the mother of all battles from UCC.

“We have a couple of hamstring injuries from the UCD game, hopefully nothing too serious. It will just be a case of making sure everyone is alright.

“I didn’t watch UCC but I heard they were very good. All my energy this week has been focused on our semi-final, so over the next 12 hours we will see what we can find out about UCC. The first reports to hand are that they were brilliant."
