Hodnett set for debut in Rebel league opener
O’Donovan Rossa attacker Hodnett won Munster U21 medals in both 2011 and 2012 and has impressed in the county championship for his club, as well as for Cork IT in the Sigerson Cup.
Hodnett forms a dangerous full-forward line alongside Daniel Goulding and Brian Hurley and otherwise there is a fairly familiar look to Brian Cuthbert’s first league side.
New captain Michael Shields is at left corner-back, with John McLoughlin the other corner and Eoin Cadogan at full-back. Clonakilty defender Tom Clancy, who played against Cork for UL in the McGrath Cup, mans the centre-back spot while Andrew O’Sullivan partners Aidan Walsh at midfield.
At last night’s first county board meeting of the year in Páirc Uí Chaoimh, children’s officer Marc Sheehan, who is also chairman of Rebel Óg, sought clarity very soon regarding this year’s Féile na nGael competition.
It is looking increasingly likely that the overall winners of Féile in Cork, and other ‘stronger’ hurling counties, may have to take part in a separate competition as Féile will be held in Ulster for the next two years and it is feared that there would not be sufficient teams of the required level for Division 1.
“It’s a retrograde step that competition would not be available,” Sheehan said in response to Cork delegate Des Cullinane’s report from Central Council.
“We need to stop flip-flopping and I would urge that we get clarity on this.”
There have been calls for an overhaul of Féile, and Cullinane expressed the view that it was no coincidence that the next two competitions would be in Ulster.
Clubs were given notice of transfer requests. All-Ireland U21 and junior football medallist Chris O’Donovan is seeking a move to Bishopstown, while Na Piarsaigh’s Stephen Glasgow has applied to transfer to Bride Rovers.
Clubs have until next Tuesday, when the county competitions control committee (CCC) meets, to express observations with regard to transfer applications, which have been emailed.
Finally, county secretary Frank Murphy announced that the county U21AHC will have an earlier start, with mid-August hoped for, so as to alleviate fixture congestion later in the year.
