Faithfuls turn to county hero Whelahan

Offaly hurling legend Brian Whelahan is set to become the county’s senior hurling manager.

Faithfuls turn to county hero Whelahan

Whelahan, who won All-Ireland titles with Offaly in 1994 and 1998, will succeed Ollie Baker, who stepped down in August after two years in charge of the Faithfuls.

The Birr club man is being recommended by a selection committee fronted by Offaly County Board chairman, Padraig Boland.

His appointment will be ratified at the November meeting of the Offaly County Board.

Whelahan, who was on the team of the millennium, was originally in the frame to take the minor manager’s job but in recent weeks progressed to being a front runner for the senior role.

Offaly open their Leinster championship campaign with an away trip to Kilkenny next season.
