Glenealy get well tested by Carnew

Glenealy, bidding for a fourth Wicklow SHC title in-a-row, were taken to extra-time by Carnew before carving out a narrow 2-16 to 1-15 victory in their semi-final replay at Aughrim yesterday.

Despite being denied a goal from a penalty, Carnew still managed to grab the lead with only minutes left on the clock with points from Martin O’Brien and TJ Hennessy from a free.

However, Leighton Glynn brought the match to extra-time when he pointed the equaliser from a free on the stroke of the full-time whistle – 0-12 to 1-9.

Brian Osbourne had a goal but Glenealy swept downfield from the puck-out and Wayne

O’Gorman goaled from an assist from Daniel Staunton and they closed out the game.

Two hours of football and one period of extra-time have not been sufficient to separate Rathnew and St Mary’s in the semi-final of Wicklow’s SFC.

At Aughrim on Saturday these two gladiators refused to be separated as they played out a 0-19 to 1-16 draw after extra-time in 80 minutes of thrilling football.

The drawn now means that the county final, pencilled in for next Sunday, has been postponed with the second replay of this semi-final likely to take place next weekend instead.

Baltinglass await the winners in the final.
