Queally in hunt for Déise job as Fanning pulls out

Mount Sion man Fanning was in line to be proposed for the position before midnight’s deadline for nominations last night. However, Fanning, a selector with Davy Fitzgerald in 2010 and ’11, won’t be seeking an interview while there were indications outgoing manager Michael Ryan may also be withdrawing.

Former Waterford defender Queally and De La Salle’s Derek McGrath are believed to be among the nominations along with Kilkenny great DJ Carey. Like Fanning, Queally also worked under the current Clare manager, serving as selector in 2008 and 2009. The Gowran man on local Kilkenny radio yesterday distanced himself from The Irish Examiner report he is interested in the possibility of taking over from Ryan.
