Errigal Ciarán win a thriller

Tyrone champions Errigal Ciarán made it through to the Hunky Dorys SFC second round at the second attempt, defeating Dromore 1-13 to 1-9 in a thrilling replay at Dromore.

The sides were level eight times before the O’Neill Cup holders pulled away in the closing stages.

The sides were deadlocked 0-5 each at the break, before Dromore sub Ryan O’Neill smashed home a spectacular goal in the opening minute of the second-half. But that was immediately cancelled out by a superb strike from teenager Mark Kavanagh.

The champions gradually got on top, Ronan McCrory and Ciaran McGinley hitting excellent points, and Dromore finished with 14 men following the dismissal of Eoin McCusker.

Carrickmore had to work hard for a 2-8 to 2-6 win over 14-man Coalisland to become the first club to reach the semis. Coalisland centre back Niall Kerr was sent off after 15 minutes for striking Conor Gormley as the Tyrone star celebrated scoring his side’s second goal.

Martin Penrose had netted two minutes earlier and, seven points behind and a man down, Coalisland were perfectly set up for a hammering. But they produced a heroic performance to stretch championship specialists Carrickmore to the limit.

With the help of Plunkett McCallan’s penalty save from Plunkett Kane, they held on, surviving a Fianna blitz which saw them pull back goals through Tiarnan O’Hagan and Gerard Toner (pen).
