Shelmaliers led the champions 1-5 to 0-0 after just 10 minutes, the goal coming inside 30 seconds from corner-forward Derek Walsh. St. Anne’s, through Red Barry, Sean Gaule, Francis Simpson and Pierce White, reduced the deficit, but trailed 1-5 to 0-6 at the interval.

However, a 33rd minute goal from Eoghan Nolan left the champions with a mountain to climb and they bowed out 2-12 to 1-11. Eight points from county player Ciaran Lyng helped St. Martin’s to a 0-15 to 0-11 win over Adamstown.

An excellent John Tubritt 25th minute goal inspired Fethard to a shock 1-7 to 0-7 win over Castletown, having led 1-5 to 0-4 at the interval.

Sarsfields, with second-half goals from sub Warren Broaders and a Paul Murphy penalty, rocked Kilanerin 2-10 to 0-9, with Mattie Forde contributing seven of the losers’ points.
