Kilmichael singing again

Kilmichael 2-09 Kilmurry 0-09

Scenes of delirium greeted the full time whistle as loyal supporters saluted a proud chapter in the Kilmichael history after defeating a hotly fancied Kilmurry.

Proud manager Diarmuid O’Riordan heaped praise on his side. “Its been a long wait, going out every year to do our best in Mid Cork but failing. Everything clicked into gear this season and, though outsiders, we had every confidence going into the game”, he said.

And Kilmichael won’t waste time preparing for their next adventure in a county quarter-final against Mitchelstown next weekend.

“It going to be difficult to get back to level ground again but we will regroup tomorrow and plan accordingly, ”said O’Riordan.

A keen edged developed from the outset, a pair of William Buckley points for Kilmurry answered by 45’s by Kilmichael netminder Shane Masters. And a pivotal moment surfaced on 17 minutes, Kilmichael nosing ahead, Daniel Twomey’s probing delivery flicked to the net by Peter Kelleher. At times, the Kilmurry defence lived a charmed existence, faulty shooting limiting Kilmichael with Finbarr Buckley and Daniel Twomey close to adding further goals. Trailing 1-4 to 0-4 at the break, Kilmurry resumed with an encouraging point by Buckley, yet they were thankful to custodian Jason McDonald on brilliantly denying Colm Dromey.

Now Kilmichael had the bit between their teeth, Dromey and James O’Leary kicking sublime points.

Far from a spent force, Kilmurry attempted a comeback, spurred on by sub James Kelleher and points by Greg Barrett and Jonathan Buckley.

Still Kilmichael held a ferocious desire to succeed, typified by the inspirational play of man of the match Foley at wing back. And the challengers turned the momentum to good account with the clinching goal in the 55th minute, a foul on Finbarr Dromey setting up a penalty O’Leary blasted to the Kilmurry net.
