Castledaly back in hunt

There were a number of surprise results in the final round of matches of the Westmeath SFC.

Reigning champions Mullingar Shamrocks and their town rivals St Loman’s Mullingar had already qualified for the semi-finals and both lost.

In Section B, Castledaly, Tyrrellspass and Garrycastle are all tied on six points and so a play-off will be required to decide which two will go through.

Surprisingly, Castledaly defeated St Loman’s in their match on Saturday 0-11 to0-10.

Loman’s rested the influential John Heslin, while Paul Sharry was suspended. This win brought Castledaly back into the contention in the title race.

Tyrrellspass had a facile win against Killucan 2-18 to 2-7, with Denis Glennon and Aaron O’Brien amongst the goalscorers.

Garrycastle were surprisingly defeated by Kinnegad 3-12 to 2-12.

In Section A, Mullingar Shamrocks had topped the group, but they too were surprisingly beaten by The Downs — who now also make the last eight — by four points

In the other Section A match, Athlone staged a dramatic comeback against Bunbrosna to clinch the last quarter-final slot. Bunbrosna were leading by seven points but Athlone scored three goals on the trot to win by a point and squeeze into the knockout stages.

In the only other senior championship game, Maryland defeated CFCW by 4-10 to 2-8. This result condemned CFCW (Castletown-Finea/Coole/Whitehall) to the relegation match where they will play Killucan.
