McNulty leaves Laois post

Laois senior football manager Justin McNulty stepped down from his role last night.

McNulty leaves Laois post

The Armagh man took over from Sean Dempsey in 2010 but despite gaining promotion in his first year, failed to garner sufficient results in the meantime.

Despite an impressive showing in the All-Ireland qualifiers against Donegal, he had been under pressure to deliver a winning performance following their Leinster championship defeat to Louth in May.

Meanwhile, Mayo’s hopes of seeing Pearce Hanley return to the county jersey appear quashed forever after the Ballaghaderreen man signed a five-year contract with AFL’s Brisbane Lions.

Brisbane are expected to formally announce the key re-signing in the coming days but Hanley said yesterday it was a done deal.

“It was just a matter of getting the right contract,” Hanley told The Courier Mail.

“There was no rush, I wasn’t going anywhere. It’s just a coincidence that I’m signing this week after all that has happened at the club with Vossy [manager].

“I love the club. We are a tight group, a really united group. I’m delighted I’m staying.”

Club legend Michael Voss was dumped this week so the retention of Hanley is a big coup for the club.

“It is matter of when, not if, he wins All-Australian honours and he is the red-hot favourite for Brisbane’s best-and-fairest award,” The Courier Mail stated.
