Town were reliant on too many individuals while the loss of Alan O’Regan through injury left them without a target man in an attack that misfired badly at times.
Although Dean Murphy and Dave Fenton shot them two points clear inside seven minutes, the losers then had to wait until a minute after half-time before adding to their tally. This, despite some spirited play from Trevor Collins, Lorcan Harrington, Donagh Bán O’Sullivan and Andrew O’Sullivan.
In attack, Dean Murphy showed up early on but once Seán Kiely emerged to control this patch, Macroom settled. Fintan Goold also excelled in a strong half-back line behind which Rory Buckley was both safe and powerful. Their midfielders, once they began to win the breaking ball, found an alert attack on duty and here Ivan Casey dictated the trend while Pat Lucey kicked four vital points in a contest where Goold was called on to clear a goal-bound effort by Castletownbere’s Jason Walsh off the line.
That was at a stage when the winners were just a point ahead but in the remaining eight minutes of the half, they surged into an 0-7 to 0-2 lead.
Although Andrew O’Sullivan broke the loser’s long barren spell with a pointed 45 a minute after the resumption, Macroom continued to dictate the trend to deservedly advance.
