Barryroe fend off brave Dripsey’s furious fightback

Barryroe 1-16 Dripsey 1-13

However, they had a narrow escape in this fourth-round tie when a last minute free from Dripsey’s Diarmuid O’Riordan was narrowly wide of the post.

Barryroe, coached by Justin McCarthy, fell behind after three minutes to a goal from David O’Sullivan, but despite this setback they drew level midway through the half. John O’Donovan looked sharp, scoring three of the six points that brought them level. However, Dripsey raced back into the lead with Diarmuid O’Riordan — whose overall tally was nine points — being joined on the scoresheet by David Buckley.

The mid-Cork outfit then went a goal clear coming up to the break but an O’Donovan free on the stroke of half-time steadied the ship somewhat for the men in blue, and brought the margin back to a two-point game, 1-7 to 0-8 in favour of Dripsey.

It could have been different though had a rasping shot from Barryroe’s Michael O’Brien not come back off the upright and later sound defending from John Carey denied them another goal opportunity.

Kieran Griffin and Tadgh Harrington hit two points to tie matters 10 minutes into the second half — Harrington’s was a spectacular long-range free. In between Dripsey had a goal disallowed and had to settle for parity at the three-quarter mark, 1-8 to 0-11.

It was then Barryroe clicked into gear scoring a goal and three points without reply. The goal was a real beauty after Michael O’Brien delightfully grabbed the sliotar from Griffin’s excellent long delivery, 1-14 to 1-8.

Dripsey were six points behind at this stage but they got back on track courtesy of O’Riordan’s free-taking. Barryroe were living dangerously with only four points separating the teams with five minutes remaining.

Adrian Fleming notched his third point to stretch the lead to five points but in typical fashion Dripsey roared back with O’Riordan and Carey finding the range.

Dripsey had one last chance to force a replay but were unlucky to see the ball whizz across goal and wide. Barryroe await the winners of St Catherine’s and Kildorrery in the last eight.
