Carew pleads for more game time for counties

Waterford boss Niall Carew believes the football championship format must be changed if weaker counties are to improve.

His side almost pulled off the shock of the season on Saturday but were edged out by Galway (1-12 to 0-14).

It was one of Waterford’s best displays in years but Carew, who only took charge in December, will not get the chance to build on it until 2014. The Kildare native believes a radical overhaul is needed to give more games to counties — his charges are bowing out yet again after just two championship games.
