Mind games aplenty as Cork reveal ‘named’ team

Cork have named the same side that beat Clare in the Munster SFC semi-final for Sunday’s provincial decider against Kerry.

Mind games aplenty as Cork reveal ‘named’ team

As usual with the Cork football side, however, ‘named’ is the operative word, as the only certainty which can be taken from last night’s team announcement is that the numbers worn by the Rebels are known.

For Sunday’s game in Killarney, which has a 2pm start, the numbers 21 (Aidan Walsh), 23 (Ciarán Sheehan) and 25 (Donncha O’Connor) could all feature by throw-in time.

In 10 games since the start of the 2011 championship, Cork have started as selected three times. At last week’s press evening manager Conor Counihan admitted that “it’s a bit like me bidding for a house. If I knew how much (money) you had, I’ve a fair idea what I’d do. I don’t think you’d tell me, would you?”

Of the team selected, six Cork players — goalkeeper Ken O’Halloran, defenders Damien Cahalane, James Loughrey and Tomás Clancy and forwards John O’Rourke and Brian Hurley — will be playing in their first Munster final.

The only change in the Tyrone team which had a comfortable win over Offaly last week sees Joe McMahon return from injury to replace Danny McBride at full-back for Saturday’s clash with Roscommon. His brother Justin is also fit again but is kept in reserve while captain Stephen O’Neill continues to be troubled by an Achilles injury and Darren McCurry remains at full-forward.

For the All-Ireland hurling qualifier with Kilkenny in Nowlan Park at 7pm tonight, Tipperary have made four changes following the Munster semi-final defeat to Limerick. Conor O’Brien replaces the injured Kieran Bergin at right half-back and there is an all-new full-forward line.

John O’Dwyer, Eoin Kelly and Lar Corbett come into the side for Pa Bourke, Shane Bourke and Séamus Callanan.

Kilkenny show two changes, with Lester Ryan in for Cillian Buckley at midfield while Colin Fennelly replaces TJ Reid at right half-forward. Injured pair Henry Shefflin and Michael Fennelly are not in the Cats’ squad. Elsewhere, Laois are unchanged for their hurling qualifier with Clare.
