St Kierans’ firepower proves decisive factor

St Kieran’s 0-20 Kilcummin 0-11

Once the winners upped the tempo in the second half, they were most impressive with some superb scores being crafted and 15 of their 20 point haul coming from play.

Edmund Walsh was very impressive and top scored with six points, while both corner forwards Philip O’Connor and Thomas Hickey were in sublime form.

Kilcummin battled hard, with full-back Chris O’Leary impressing while Shane McSweeney and Kevin Gorman shaded matters over Seamus Scanlon and Shane Curtin in the midfield battle. Kevin McCarthy and Kerry U21 midfielder Kieran Murphy had their moments up front but Kilcummin lacked the firepower of their opponents.

The opening half was even enough but Philip O’Connor was giving Donal Maher a torrid afternoon while Sean Brosnan had his hands full with Thomas Hickey, and with Eamon John O’Donoghue breaking ball on the edge of the square, it took heroics from Kerry custodian Brendan Kealy to deny St Kieran’s a goal.

Kealy denied Mike Finnegan with a tremendous save from six yards in the fifth minute and then Philip O’Connor with a point blank save in the 15 while Eamon John O’Donoghue struck the crossbar.

St Kieran’s finished the half the stronger after early points from Philip O’Connor (2) , Mike Finnegan, James Walsh (free), Edmund Walsh. However, DJ Fleming with three points and points from Kevin Gorman and Kevin McCarthy, had Kilcummin a point in front by the 25th minute. Then points from Thomas Hickey and an Edmund Walsh free gave St Kieran’s a slender 0-7 to 0-6 half time lead.

However the second half was all one way traffic as St Kieran’s moved into to gear and five unanswered points from Eamon John O’Donoghue, the Walsh brothers Edmund and James, Thomas Hickey with two put the game beyond Kilcummin’s reach at 0-12 to 0-6 after 40 minutes.

The highlight of the final quarter was a brilliant save by Brendan Kealy.
