McIvor happy as dominant Derry ease past Wexford

Indeed it could have been worse for the hosts, with the Ulster side totalling 15 wides.

Little wonder then that Derry boss Brian McIvor was a happy man. ” I’m happy with 19 points and a nine point win. We won’t be carried away but it’s something positive to build on.”

His opposite number, Aidan O’Brien, hopes his side can take valuable lessons from the defeat. “Derry took the initiative playing into the breeze and would have been the happier side at the break going in two points clear. We were chasing the game but had Shane Roche’s effort hit the net instead of the bar in the second half it could have lifted us. We’re disappointed but it is a huge learning curve. We have to pick it up for Louth next weekend.”

Derry popped over three points in the opening nine minutes despite playing against the wind, with corner-back Gerard O’Kane and Emmet McGuckin (2) on target. At the other end, 17 minutes elapsed before account Ben Brosnan opened the home account with a free.

Mark Lynch and Shane Roche (free) exchanged points, but a Wexford surge yielded points from PJ Banville, Roche and Brosnan to have them level (0-6 each) after 33 minutes. But that was as close as Wexford were to get as Derry finished strongly with scores from Sean L. McGoldrick and Enda Lynn for a two point half-time lead.

Wexford began the second half with a Brosnan pointed free, but Derry took charge as Enda Lynn, Charlie Kielt, James Kielt and PJ McCluskey reeled off scores for a 0-13 to 0-7 advantage by the 52nd minute.

Rory Quinlivan ended Wexford’s scoring famine with a 55th minute point and the hosts were desperately unlucky when Roche’s strike hit the crossbar.

The Ulster side outscored their opponents 0-6 to 0-2 in the final ten minutes to seal an impressive victory.
