In a high-scoring O’Byrne Cup game played at Drogheda, the two accounted for all but six points of their side’s tally, Clarke, the county’s leading scorer in 2012, bagging 1-7.
Benefiting from John Heslin’s midfield play and Donal Kingston and Niall Kilroy’s scores, UCD fully deserved their early 1-2 to 0-2 lead, the goal coming from Kilroy after Sean Connor had denied Kingston.
By the interval, wind-assisted Louth were in charge — two McEneaney points and a goal from Clarke making it 1-9 to 1-4. By then both sides were down to 14 men, Mark Brennan and Dublin player Rory O’Carroll having been sent off for second bookable offences.
UCD stayed in touch throughout the second half, but Louth, boosted by a well-worked McEneaney goal on 15 minutes, always had the look of winners about them.
