New Dubs boss Jim Gavin made his managerial debut in Clonsilla yesterday where his side ran out two point winners over a club selection in the annual Dubs Stars challenge.
He had a familiar face in his official backroom team as fellow Dub and former Super Bantamweight champ Dunne was on hand. Dunne’s official title is Sports Performance and Lifestyle coach and Gavin explained how the novel coaching role will work.
“He’s there to help players maximise their sporting performance and help them get their lifestyle aligned so as to give them the capability to perform,” said Gavin, who worked with Dunne before in the Dubs’ successful U21 set-ups.
“He has no involvement in the tactical side of the game but rather in helping players realise their potential and that’s what it is. Every player has potential and he’s a guy who has achieved at the very highest level of world sport. If we can tap into some of that then it might be a benefit.”
Ironically, the Dublin hurlers also have a boxing legend in their backroom team, Olympic gold medallist Michael Carruth.
Gavin is clearly leaving no stone unturned to bring success back to the capital after failing to retain the Sam Maguire Cup in 2012.
On the field, he was given plenty of food for thought yesterday.
With many players unavailable due to Bryan Cullen’s wedding in Cork, Diarmuid Connolly captained an experimental side.
Former county hurler Tomás Brady was named at full-back and enjoyed an exciting duel with Leinster club medallist Dean Rock across the afternoon. Corner-forward Paul Hudson also impressed sniping six points.
