Ricken content as proud St Vincent’s advance to semi-final

St Vincent’s (Cork) 1-12 Moycarkey-Borris (Tipperary) 0-06

As well as the satisfaction gained in following up their county final victory, there was the added bonus of atoning for the defeat by Mullinahone in their last appearance in 2006.

Coach Keith Ricken pointed out that after three hard games in as many weeks, they didn’t do themselves justice six years ago. “This year is slightly different. This is our sixth game in the championship and they have been spread out, with the exception of last Sunday. There is a pride and an honour representing your county and the lads are very much into that.”

Even before half-time, the outcome looked almost inevitable. Without really matching the standard of their county final display, they looked superior, as Moycarkey coach Pat Flanagan acknowledged. Competing in the grade for just two years, he said: “Having seen St Vincent’s last week, we knew they were good. We gave it the best shot we could, but were beaten by a better team.”

With Christopher Kenneally a late replacement for Kyle Lynch and fitting in well at corner-back, St Vincent’s made the better start, going two points clear before goalkeeper Paddy O’Shea made an excellent save from Phil Kelly in the fourth minute. At their best, when they moved the ball with purpose and precision, they looked in a different class, however they wasted good possession time and again.

Moycarkey experienced bigger problems in their attack. They trailed 0-8 to 0-3 at the break and in another 10 minutes the game was as good as over as a contest. Cian Barry got the only goal and Moycarkey defender John Kelly was dismissed for knocking him after he scored.

Ricken accepts the need for improvement. “There were certainly cobwebs there after the county final.”
