Clonmel snatch draw in late drama at Golden
Guiry’s point handed Clonmel their second successive draw in their debut season in the Harty Cup, following an opening round stalemate against St Colman’s. But there was a degree of late controversy as Castletroy claimed John Stack should have been awarded a point in the 59th minute. And some observers believed Guiry’s effort, from the final play, went under and not over the bar as back-pedalling Casletroy goalkeeper Cian O’Dwyer struggled with the flight of the high ball.
However, a draw was the fairest result although Castletroy did finish the match with 11 wides, including seven in the first half.
Castletroy, who lost their opening fixture of the season to Ardscoil Rís, were the more impressive side in that opening period and led by 0-6 to 0-4 at half-time.
Castletroy were driven forward by midfielder Barry Nash and half-forwards Tom Morrissey and John Fox, who picked off two early points from play. Edward Doyle was also in good free-taking form while at the other end, Conor Gleeson hit five of his seven points from placed balls for Clonmel High School.
Indeed, Guiry and Ross Mulcahy were the only other players bar Gleeson to register a score for the Tipperary side but their efforts ensure Clonmel remain unbeaten in this campaign.
