‘Logistical issues’ cloud Horan’s Mayo future

Mayo manager James Horan is considering his position after a number of logistical issues with the county board came to light.

The Ballintubber clubman won two Connacht titles and reached an All-Ireland final in his two years in charge.

But now he is seeking clarification on a number of matters which he feels hindered his team’s preparation at different stages last season. These include provision of training pitches, the availability of Elverys MacHale Park and hotel bases for matches in Dublin.

It’s understood Mayo used a different base for each of their five games in Dublin during the season as they competed in the final rounds of the National League and All-Ireland series.

Horan is about to enter the final year of a three-year contract and was widely expected to see out his term and possibly agree an extension next year.

However, just 15 days after he guided his side to the final decider against Donegal, news filtered through that he unhappy with aspects of Mayo’s preparations.

A source close to the manager said Horan has a number of issues to attend to before he commits his future to the Green and Red.

“The team has made great progress over the past two years and James is very happy with the players and the way they have developed.

“They have given huge loyalty to the county and he couldn’t ask for more from them, but there are a number of other issues to be sorted out if Mayo are going to make the next step.”

The news that Horan is considering his position is sure to be greeted with great disquiet by the Mayo public.

If Horan did feel it necessary to leave it would not be the first time a Mayo manager left in controversial circumstances after bringing a team to the All-Ireland final.

In 1990 John O’Mahony quit after the board denied him the right to pick his own selectors and he went on to claim a Connacht title with Leitrim and two All-Irelands with Galway.

Mickey Moran and John Morrison were also let go in 2006 after falling out with the board due to financial restraints.
