Walsh arrives to rescue Kanturk

Kanturk 2-15 Fr O’Neills 1-15

Walsh wasn’t used for 45 minutes due to a hamstring injury sustained on football duty last week, but a desperate situation — Kanturk were trailing by a point — called for desperate measures and his arrival sparked a marvellous recovery and ultimate victory for the Duhallow side who set up a semi-final meeting against Kilworth.

Had Kanturk lost this disappointing tie they would have had only themselves to blame. Despite their outfield dominance they hit 15 wides.

While Walsh’s contribution was undoubtedly crucial, goalkeeper Anthony Nash, centre-back John McLoughlin and wing-forward Ian Walsh also played important roles.

Two goals — the first from a 20-metre free by Nash, the second just on half time by John Browne, helped Kanturk to an interval lead of 2-3 to 0-6.

The game improved somewhat on the change over and when Edmond Holland finished a cross from Luke Swayne to the net the momentum swung back towards Fr O’Neills.

The tempo of the game quickened as the half wore on, but a point down and 15 minutes to go, Kanturk sprung Walsh from the bench and it changed the match completely.

His two points from the sideline were worth the admission fee alone, and when Fr O’Neills lost the services of O’Leary for a second yellow card, Kanturk finished in style with three points in a row.
