Earlier, Caheragh had the character to wipe out a five-point lead, overcome the handicap of playing with a man short for almost a quarter of an hour and end normal time with 13 players after a second yellow card offence.
Bringing on Patrick Crowley and Kevin Barrett to get back up to full strength, the five-time champions edged a point clear after the first half of extra-time and completed the job in the closing stages when Plunkett’s made a mighty effort to save a game.
Colin Bennett had expertly converted a penalty and added a point with 20 minutes of normal time remaining to give Plunkett’s a 1-10 to 0-8 lead.
But Mark Barrett took the game by the scruff of the neck and provided the ammunition for the Caheragh forwards who used it well to ease a point clear by the 60th minute. Then Seán Murray got a second yellow and Plunkett’s Colin Bennett converted a free to force extra-time.
Back to full strength, Caheragh needed keeper Patrick Kirby to save well from Conor McCarthy before confirming their superior recuperative powers.
