Clyda ease past depleted Mayfield

Clyda Rovers 0-15 Mayfield 1-5

Mayfield were forced to field without a significant number of regular starting 15 due to players attending Euro 2012 and the writing was on the wall for them after 20 minutes.

The city side did start brightly though with a point from Eric Fleming inside the second minute.

Nicky Kelly, playing at full-forward in the opening exchanges, cut through the Clyda defence from the next kick-out but saw his effort hit the side netting from close range.

Fleming then added a second point to bolster Mayfield as Clyda struggled to get the ball beyond the opposition midfield in the opening 10 minutes.

Clyda managed to turn things around by the 14th minute, however, when consecutive fouls committed by the Mayfield defence allowed James Murphy to slot over from two placed balls to draw them level.

The Mourneabbey men then took the lead on the quarter-hour but Fleming responded at the other end to tie the sides for the second time.

From here though, Clyda took control and three consecutive points from Murphy, Cork senior Paudie Kissane and Oliver O’Hanlon laid the foundation for victory.

Substitute Declan Roche, Fionn O’Shea and Kissane with a point from the top drawer, kicked Clyda 0-9 to 0-3 clear by half-time.

Mayfield wing-back Shane O’Donovan drove forward on the resumption to kick their fourth point but a brace from Roche and Clyda full-forward John O’Hanlon cancelled out his effort.

With 37 minutes played Mayfield were handed a life-line when Nicky Kelly rocketed the ball to the roof of the Clyda net from 20 yards and the deficit was reduced to 0-4.

Murphy’s consistency from placed balls allowed Clyda to pull away again by the 42nd minute to lead by six on a score-line of 0-13 to 1-4.

Mayfield made a raft of substitutions in the final 10 minutes with the game firmly beyond their reach.

For Clyda, a third point from substitute Roche and a point from a second substitute Colin Ronayne before the final whistle emphasised the strength and depth of their panel as they resume the hunt for that long awaited PIFC title.
