Star-studded Carbery swat aside students’ test

Fielding a team with a liberal sprinkling of inter-county under 21, junior and senior players, Carbery served notice that they will have a big say in the battle for this year’s title after they had a comfortable victory over CIT in the third round of the Cork SFC at Cloughduv last night.

The excellence of county senior captain Graham Canty, who covered every inch of the pitch, Alan O’Connor, Owen Sexton, the O’Driscoll brothers Colm and Kevin and scorer-in-chief Declan Barron ensured the West Cork divisional side had plenty to spare at the end of a lively contest.

To be fair to the students, the final score is a bit flattering to the winners. They more than matched their opponents for effort but didn’t have the firepower up front to finish off some excellent approach work, but it was no fault of Mark Griffin, Donough Leahy, James Walsh, Jerry O’Connor and Kevin Hallissey that they failed.

Despite playing against the wind in the opening half, Carbery made the better start but excellent approach work was ruined by faulty shooting and they hit three wides in the opening five minutes.

Scores were slow in coming and the sides were level twice before sustained pressure by Carbery eventually produced a goal, and a superb effort it was, scored by Denis O’Sullivan who finished a great passing move to the corner of the net via the butt of the upright. That score settled the West Cork side and playing excellent free flowing football they finished the half with a succession of points by Declan Barron to lead 1-8 to 0-4.

Credit to the students because they threatened a recovery with two quick points on the changeover, but they failed to maintain the momentum and despite the best efforts of Kerry under 21 player James Walsh at midfield, and Kevin Hallissey up front, they never threatened a goal which might made all the difference.

The dominance of Canty, and the blistering pace of Alan O’Connor and Colm O’Driscoll kept the students defence working overtime, and the pressure was finally rewarded with a second goal scored by the lively Declan Barron to put the finishing touches to a splendid night’s work.
