The new square ball rule in Gaelic football will come into operation from Sunday’s Connacht SFC opener between New York and Sligo.

GAA president Liam O’Neill confirmed all playing rule changes will be in force for this summer’s championships.

They include umpires being permitted to consult with the referee when in doubt about the validity of a score and the redefinition of a break in play as occasions when the ball has gone out of play after a score, a wide or when the referee has stopped play to allow medical assistance for a player.
