Hurley second-half goals propel Fachtna’s to deserved victory

A brace of goals from St Fachtna’s outstanding corner-forward Mike Hurley early in the second half turned this Cork Colleges U16 ‘A’ football final on its head at CIT yesterday, paving the way for what was a deserved victory for the Skibbereen school.

Rochestown got off to a dream start with Mark Dolan opening their account with a goal inside three minutes, quickly followed by a point from a Daniel Meaney free kick.

The sides traded points over an evenly matched first half, with Dolan’s goal separating the teams at the interval, 1-4 to 0-4.

The contest was decided in the opening five minutes of the second half when Hurley struck 2-2, with one goal coming from the penalty spot, to open up a five-point lead.

Shell-shocked Rochestown College tried to claw their way back, but were repeatedly guilty of taking on speculative attempts on goal.

Gary Hartnett’s late point left just a goal between the teams but Fachtna’s flooded their defence and shut Rochestown out.
