Pyne and Finn turn on the style for Glanworth
The pair were at the heart of everything for Glanworth and led their team to a victory that should have been secured in regulation time. Credit must go to Fermoy, however. Having being second best for the entire contest, they capitalised on some late Glanworth complacency to produce four unanswered points, the last, an outstanding strike from Jerry Daly, sending the game into extra-time.
Having delivered such a late sucker punch, Fermoy looked favourites to win, but Glanworth wanted it more and, despite several players falling victim to cramp, they outfought their opponents.
Despite perfect conditions for flowing football, both teams struggled to settle into any rhythm early on. A fine strike from High O’Neill opened Glanworth’s account on three minutes but a free from Jack Hutchings levelled the sides ten minutes later.
Glanworth enjoyed the lion’s share of possession but failed to really make their dominance count on the scoreboard and after 18 minutes they led by just a point courtesy of a Pyne free kick.
The game sparked into life on the 20-minute mark when Jack Hutchings and Mattie Condon slotted points in quick succession to give Fermoy the lead before Glanworth replied with five unanswered scores leaving them 0-7 to 0-3 ahead at the interval.
With both teams trading scores during an evenly matched third quarter, Glanworth looked certain to run out winners before Fermoy’s attack finally took a hold of the game and strikes from Hutchings, Condon, O’Callaghan and Daly’s 63rd minute effort, levelled the sides.
Fermoy, who had made good use of their larger squad, looked fresher than Glanworth heading into extra-time. But Finn and Pyne managed to inspire their team into one last push and fittingly they each claimed a late brace to seal their team’s hard-earned win.
