Steven McDonnell admits he derives a lot of pleasure from the amount of well-wishers following his decision to retire from inter-county football.

The former Armagh star has received a wealth of goodwill messages ranging from the likes of Kerry’s Bomber Liston, Tomás Ó Sé and Paul Galvin to Leinster’s Rob Kearney and Everton’s Shane Coleman.

“The amount of messages has been unreal. It makes me stand up and realise that I did go and achieve something.”

McDonnell rues the fact Armagh failed to follow up on their 2002 All-Ireland win but is thankful for winning a medal.
