Val Andrews’ charges, reeling from a poor performance against Offaly last week, were six points to the good inside as many minutes. David Givney’s well-taken goal propelled the visitors into a great position but it all went downhill after that.
By the midway mark, six points from the boot of Donal Shine alongside efforts from Karol Mannion, Cathal Cregg (two) and David Keenan had brought the home side level, 1-7 to 0-10.
Two points from Givney and Niall Smith inside the opening minutes of the second half suggested Cavan were back on track but David O’Gara’s 37th minute goal edged the home side in front for the first time.
Cavan’s Martin Dunne restored parity by the 48th minute but the visitors didn’t score again. The home side completely took over in the final quarter and three points from substitute Kevin Higgins yielded a comfortable five-point victory.
