Mayfield win first Creedon Cup title
Both enjoyed periods of dominance, but, overall, there can be no denying Mayfield were the better side and deserved to take the cup for the first time.
Despite Macroom getting the better start, once Mayfield worked their way into the game they went in front after 23 minutes and were never behind again. Macroom did level in the second-half but that was as good as it got as Mayfield responded with three points to secure the title.
Points from Olan Murphy and Patrick Lucey put Macroom in front, Paul Condon replying with two frees to level matters. Barry Hegarty put Mayfield back in front, Fintan Goold levelling matters after 20 minutes. With 23 minutes gone the crucial score came when Roy Scannell set up Colm O’Sullivan for a Mayfield goal and by half-time they led 1-5 to 0-5.
Seán Kiely reduced the deficit, the impressive Condon hitting two more, before Macroom enjoyed their best spell. Two points from Lucey and scores from Kiely and Andrew Hegarty had them back on level terms. But Mayfield finished strongly, Condon hitting two more and Barry Hegarty also scoring to secure the cup.
