The hosts dominated from the outset, racing five points clear before Brian Byrne opened the Kilkenny account in the 9th minute. But it was one-way traffic from there to the break, with Waterford leading 0-16 to 0-1 at the interval.

A Stephen Duggan free in the 65th minute completed the Kilkenny scoring but the visitors were twice denied goals by the alertness of Waterford keeper Stephen Enright.
