Canty’s call for change
Canty, who only played minor roles for the county in the 2010 and 2011 seasons due to injury believes clubs should get one chance and if defeated, should then be entered into a secondary competition.
“I would say you get one chance and maybe if you lose, you should go into a secondary competition,” he said.
“How you’d do it, I’m not entirely sure but I’d like to see options explored. It’s not working the last two or three years so we shouldn’t be just ploughing on with what we have.”
The Bantry man continued: “The club is the heartbeat of the GAA. Without the club, you have nothing. So I’d like to see changes to the championship on a trial basis. Trial it for a two year period, evaluate it afterwards and see, but what we’re doing at the moment, doesn’t seem to be working in Cork. I’d like to see a couple of proposals, try them, evaluate them. If it helps it, good, then we tweak it and if not, we change it again but what we’re doing the last few years, I don’t see it working.”
The format is one issue that irks Canty, but the manner in which club games are “shoe-horned into a few weeks here and there” also rankles.
Newmarket won the Premier Intermediate Football County, despite having lost their opening two rounds of the championship. Such a system cannot continue, believes Canty. “I’d like to see options looked at from the point of view of a fixture calendar for clubs. At the moment they seem to be shoe-horned into a few weeks here and there. At the moment it seems like the inter-county season dictates hugely what happens in the club arena. It seems to dictate too much. I’d like to see club games and a club calendar get more of a say. How that’s done, I don’t know. Maybe having a slightly shorter inter-county season, just giving more of a window for club games to happen because every year you’re playing less and less club games and I don’t think that’s going to help the future of the game.”
