Super Staunton calls the tune for Carnacon

A TALLY of 1-9 from star attacker Cora Staunton helped Carnacon of Mayo win the Tesco All-Ireland Club Ladies SFC title or a fourth time at Ballymahon, Co. Longford yesterday.

Leading 0-3 to 0-1 after the first quarter, Carnacon bolstered their lead with a fine Aoife Brennan goal. And despite missing a penalty, which Cora Staunton sent wide before half-time, they still led 1-7 to 0-2.

Staunton and Ciara McDermott exchanged points upon the resumption before Staunton struck for Carnacon’s second goal for a 2-8 to 0-3 lead. After that, Na Fianna held the bulk of possession and were given some hope in the 43rd minute when Orlath Egan nipped in to touch the ball home.

Laura Walsh added another green flag but it was as close as they came.
