DENIZENS of Hill 16 will be praying extra hard for an upturn in the country’s fiscal fortunes over the next 12 months after Pat Gilroy’s assertion his hopes of continuing as Dublin manager beyond 2012 are basically index-linked to the economy.

It was finally confirmed on Monday night the Dalkia managing director will continue to manage the county’s senior footballers after almost eight months of will-he-won’t-he, but the situation will be reassessed again next year.

“I can only give a one-year commitment,” he explained yesterday. “The economic situation we are in changes by the week. That’s the fact. I couldn’t commit to longer than that. That might change in a year’s time, but I just couldn’t go it for a longer term than that. It will depend on what is happening in the outside world.”
