Angry Glenswilly must play on
Despite submitting a letter insisting they will not play senior fixtures without county star and International Rules panellist Michael Murphy, Glenswilly have been told the league tie will go ahead this weekend as scheduled.
The Ulster Council has accommodated Glenswilly by pushing back their provincial quarter-final against Monaghan champions Latton to Sunday, November 13, when Murphy will be home from Australia.
However, Donegal chiefs are refusing to budge in their stance that Glenswilly must fulfil their three remaining league fixtures, without the services of Murphy.
McDaid fumed: “We’re forced to play this weekend without him. We’ve been asked to go out and play this weekend, having played for the last five or six weekends on the trot in high intensity games.”
Glenswilly’s three remaining league fixtures have been fixed for the next three weekends and McDaid added: “God knows what we’re going to do.
“They set one precedent with the St Eunan’s hurlers and now we have a player away playing International Rules. We have an appeal in as well with Ulster because during the summer we played league games without [our] county players.
“They put us down to play against a full-strength Dungloe team, who had no county players, when Four Masters or Gweedore, who had county players [missing], had no game. We could have played either of those instead.”
Glenswilly took a stand and refused to play against Dungloe, who were subsequently awarded the points.
On the current situation, McDaid added: “After Michael made the International Rules squad, a letter went into the CCC and we told them we’re not willing to play crunch league games without him. But they still set the fixtures.”
Glenswilly management and officials were set to meet after club training last night to discuss their options regarding the Cloughaneely fixture, with a boycott of the weekend tie a distinct possibility.
