Despite playing into a first half wind, Horeswood looked the sharper side, particularly at midfield where Thomas Howlin and Paddy Murphy were dominant. Behind them the half-back line of Eddie Shiely, Leigh O’Brien and Barry Hearn were outstanding in negating the Castletown attack.
After Banville and Brendan Halpin exchanged points, Horeswood had their opening goal from Shiely after 12 minutes (1-2 to 0-2). The sides traded two points apiece as Horeswood led 1-4 to 0-4 at the interval, but it took a superb 25th minute save from keeper Shane O’Hanlon to deny Anthony Masterson a goal.
Castletown stormed into the game on the resumption and points from George Sunderland, Masterson (2) and James Lannigan reduced the deficit. They drew level nine minutes from time through an Anthony Masterson pointed free and it seemed the momentum was with the champions.
But Horsewood dug deep and finished in stunning style as goals from David Shannon and Declan Murphy sealed victory and secured their first title since 2009.
