Clinical Carbery fires Éire Óg to semi-final

ÉIRE ÓG came from four points down in the second half to send Palatine tumbling out of the Carlow SFC in Saturday’s quarter-final at Dr Cullen Park — the former Leinster champions winning by 3-11 to 2-8.

Right corner-forward Bryan Carbery was in lethal form, scoring 2-5 as Éire Óg qualified for a semi-final meeting with holders Old Leighlin. Palatine led 1-4 to 0-6 at half-time, their goal coming in the 18th minute from Ciarán Moran.

The Kildare border side led 1-7 to 0-7 entering the final quarter but an Éire Óg penalty was coolly chipped to the Palatine net by Carbery to level. In the following minutes Éire Óg blitzed their opponents with 2-3 without reply, goals coming from the busy Cormac Mullins and Carbery, as the five-time Leinster champions closed out the game.

Tinryland strolled into the semi-finals with a 3-16 to 0-11 hammering of O’Hanrahan’s. This was a trap to line victory for Tinryland, seeking a first SFC triumph since 1981, with right corner-forward Paul Broderick classy from placed balls and play, Tinryland led 1-8 to 0-4 at half time, their goal coming from full forward Evan Doyle on 14 minutes.

The second half was played in a downpour but it did not dampen Tinryland spirits as they scored 1-7 without reply in 13 minutes as a demoralised Blues side folded. Broderick top-scored for Tinryland, with 1-5, who now meet Rathvilly in the second semi-final.
