I KNOW a Kerryman who likes to make the provocative argument that Colm Cooper is the most under-appreciated footballer in the country. While he acknowledges that by now most sentient and rational people recognise Gooch’s greatness, he reckons that people still don’t realise just how great the Kerry captain is.

It’s like the fella who once said that The Beatles were the most under-rated act in music. Even when Kerry were under the cosh in previous finals — most notably against Tyrone and many of those alongside him were floundering - Gooch always delivered in finals. Many players find the captaincy burdensome in the final but Gooch is at the right age and is unlikely to be sidetracked. If Dublin can somehow keep him subdued for Sunday, they will be half way to getting Bryan Cullen up those steps to collect Sam.
