Kennelly linked with new AFL club

KERRY’S attempts to lure Tadhg Kennelly back for next season may have hit an obstacle after reports in Australia linked the retiring Sydney Swans star to new AFL club Greater Western Sydney Giants.

The 30-year-old former All-Ireland winner has announced his retirement from the AFL but the Giants, a new club that will compete in the league for the first time next season, are targeting retired players to addexperience to their ranks.

Giants coach Kevin Sheedy has gone on record to state he wants to addexperienced AFL players to his predominantly young squad, and is in line to recruit recently retired orde-listed players.

And with Kennelly, who will leave the Swans at the end of this season, extremely familiar with Sydney city which is home to the new Giants, the Listowel man has been linked with a shock move.

“I honestly haven’t thought about that, but we wanted to get the blokes over the line we have really been showing interest in,” said coach Kevin Sheedy. “We’ll have a look at what’s going to happen as the finals unfold and players get de-listed, then you will find out what the real menu is,” the Giants coach said.

Meanwhile, Kennelly has been named on the Swans starting team for tomorrow’s elimination final away to St Kilda, club of fellow Kerry native Tommy Walsh, who is not included in the Saints squad.
