Lights out for Mayo hurling

THERE were angry scenes in MacHale Park, Castlebar, on Thursday night when an MHC game had to be abandoned because no one informed the caretaker to turn the floodlights on.

Lights out for Mayo hurling

The match between Castlebar Mitchels and Tooreen had been fixed for 7.15pm but was abandoned as darkness fell and the lights at the new €10m redevelopment remained off.

“It seems there were two matches fixed for MacHale Park by the hurling committee, one at six and the other at a quarter past seven,” said county board secretary Seán Feeney.

“They never gave notification to the caretaker and it takes about 20 minutes for the lights to warm up so the match was called off. It was regrettable.”
