Magical Masterson shoots down Starlights

WEXFORD netminder Anthony Masterson put his recent Croke Park controversy behind him as he steered reigning champions Castletown to a 0-16 to 2-7 victory over Starlights.

Magical Masterson shoots down Starlights

Masterson, who had avoided an eight-week ban 48 hours previously after he apologised for his comments regarding referee Derek Fahy, was in sparkling form in his full-forward role contributing 0-7, with two delightful points off either foot from play in the second period.

Castletown stormed into a 0-7 to 0-0 lead inside 20 minutes but a late scoring burst from Starlights produced points from Jason Russell (two) and John Hudson (free) saw their lead reduced to 0-7 to 0-3 at the interval.

Second half goals from John Hudson and Ricky Fox hauled Starlights back into contention but Masterson, with some excellent points, along with two from Conor Carty frees, helped the reigning champions survive and clinch their spot in the knockout stages.

Two sparkling second-half goals from Liam Donnelly and sub Ciaran Shaughnessy helped Shelmaliers to a comfortable 2-14 to 1-11 victory over Taghmon-Camross, having led 0-8 to 1-3 at the interval, the losers’ goal coming from Seamus McLoughlin.

Taghmon-Camross improved considerably on the resumption but still trailed 1-8 to 1-6 when Shaughnessy pounced for a 45th minute goal to secure the points for his side. Their opponents had to depend on four late Lloyd Colfer points to put a more respectable look on the scoreboard.

St Mary’s (Rosslare) overcame a strong Fethard second half recovery to emerge with a 1-11 to 1-7 victory over Fethard, the sides having been level at the break, 0-6 to 1-3. The Fethard goal came from corner-forward Damien Browne.

A Tiernan Rossiter goal within 30 seconds of the restart set up St Mary’s, but Fethard bounced back and it as 1-8 to 1-7 entering the closing minutes. However, late points from two Rossiter frees and Lee Devereux gave the south county side two valuable points to keep their chances of making it through to the knockout stages very much alive.
