Finn stars as Kinsale book date with Youghal

KINSALE will face Youghal in the IFC quarter-final after they overcame the challenge of Cill na Martra in a dour contest at Ovens on Saturday evening.

Gearóid Finn, who was originally named on the bench only to replace Donal Murphy just before throw-in, stole the show with 1-3 and in the end it was the goal that proved the difference for Kinsale.

With just over quarter of the game gone, Niall McCarthy embarked on a gut-busting run from his own half and, after laying off to Finn, the corner-forward drilled the ball into the corner of the net.

Cill na Martra certainly had the chances to at least take the game to extra-time but some wasteful finishing throughout the second-half, where they dominated possession for long spells proved to be their downfall.

They managed just three points from play amidst a slew of poor wides, with Caoimhín Ó hUidhir giving them a chance right up until the end thanks to his precision from placed balls.

After a tepid start to proceedings, Kinsale opened up a two point gap in the 10th minute thanks to points from Derry O’Callaghan and Brian Coughlan and that gap was one they held onto for the majority of the game.

They led 1-4 to 0-5 at the break and, despite Cill na Martra spending the bulk of the second period in the Kinsale half, the sides went point for point as Kinsale maintained their two-point buffer.
