Garrycastle stay unbeaten

CHAMPIONS Garrycastle remain on course to make it three titles in-a-row after the final round of group games this weekend.

Garrycastle stay unbeaten

Garrycastle completed a 100% record by easily defeating Maryland, 2-13 to 0-9, last evening to claim five wins out of five and book their place in the semi-final.

Mullingar Shamrocks clinched second place in Group 2 with an expected victory over Bunbrosna, with the Mullingar side running out 0-16 to 1-8 winners. Shamrocks’ only group defeat came at the hands of Garrycastle.

The Downs, despite having lost their first two games of the championship, sneaked in to claim third spot in Group 2, and a place in the quarter-final, with their third win on the trot, defeating Athlone on Saturday by 1-10 to 0-10.

That loss for Athlone surprisingly confines them to a relegation play-off match as they finished pointless and bottom of Group 2. They now face the prospect of intermediate football for the first time.

In the relegation match Athlone will face near neighbours Tubberclair as they finished bottom and pointless of Group 1, having lost their final group game to St Loman’s on Saturday by 0-17 to 1-10.

St Loman’s have marched into the semi-final after they too finished with a 100% record and duly topped Group 1.

In the real knockout match at the weekend Killucan needed a win to finish ahead of Tyrrellspass but could only manage a draw, 2-9 to 1-12, and it was enough for Tyrrellspass to advance.

Castledaly also qualified for the remaining quarter-final spot when they defeated St Malachy’s on Friday by 2-11 to 0-6.

Westmeath SFC quarter finals: Mullingar Shamrocks v Castledaly, The Downs v Tyrrellspass. Semi-finals: Garrycastle v The Downs/Tyrrellspass, St Loman’s v Mullingar Shamrocks/Castledaly.
