Egan Tourlestrane’s saviour

TUBBERCURRY almost upset the odds in Group Two of the Sligo SFC but ended up drawing with their south Sligo rivals and last year’s county finalists, Tourlestrane, 0-10 to 0-10, at Curry yesterday evening.

Brian Egan landed the levelling score, from a free, to earn Tourlestrane a point which keeps their ambitions intact. John Quinn was their top scorer with five points.

Still without talisman David Kelly, currently in America, Tubbercurry put themselves within reach of the quarter-finals with a gutsy performance and were 0-7 to 0-4 ahead at half-time after a wind-assisted first half.

Stephen Kilcoyne and Colm McGee, scorers of 0-4 and 0-3 respectively, were Tubbercurry’s top marksmen.

Meanwhile, prolific club scorer Mark Breheny notched eight points for St Mary’s but the Sligo town club were still held to a draw by Curry, 1-10 apiece. Substitute Ciaran Brennan’s 59th minute equalising point saw these title contenders share the spoils at Bunnanadden on Saturday.

St Mary’s held the interval initiative, 1-3 to 0-3, thanks to teenage rugby ace Colm Egan’s 18th minute goal but Curry’s improved second half yielded a goal from county star Adrian Marren, while David Maye kicked five points overall.

Also on Saturday evening, St John’s reasserted their credentials with a seven-points defeat of Geevagh, 1-17 to 2-7, at Markievicz Park.

With Michael McNamara the fulcrum, St John’s were the slicker side and had sharp finishers in goalscorer David Rooney and point scorers Brian Harris and John Scanlon. Cormac Hughes netted two goals for Geevagh, who are destined for the relegation play offs.

Ahead of next weekend’s final series of round robin games, defending champions Eastern Harps, whose main attacking star has been Niall McGill, are guaranteed a place in the knockout stages but they could go directly into the semi-finals if they win Group One by overcoming current table-toppers Coolera-Strandhill.
