Corkery proved to be Fermoy’s tormentor-in-chief with an exceptional display, scoring 0-3, 0-2 from play, but it was a relatively poor contest. Fermoy began positively and were ahead inside the opening minute courtesy of a Jack Hutchings converted 20-metre free.
Aghabullogue’s Patrick Finnegan sent over two frees of his own on seven and eight minutes to edge the victors in front.
However, a bullet of a goal by full-forward Ian Brennan on 11 minutes put Fermoy in the ascendency, even though yet they would fail to add to their tally until the second minute of the second-half.
During that period, Aghabullogue registered 1-3 and also had a goal disallowed. Two sweet points from Corkery and a 30-metre pointed free by Finnegan restored Aghabullogue’s advantage, 0-5 to 1-1 after 23 minutes.
Seven minutes later Paul O’Rourke turned Corkery’s wayward shot into the net but was deemed to have been in the square when the ball came across.
Almost immediately Ivan O’Callaghan kicked out the ball, Aghabullogue worked it to O’Rourke, whose half-blocked shot nestled in the top corner giving them a 1-5 to 1-1 half-time lead.
Substitute Darragh O’Carroll drilled over for Fermoy shortly after the restart but points from Corkery (free) and O’Rourke killed any momentum O’Carroll engineered.
Sean Carty kicked a point and James Campion added a free for Fermoy to leave three between them after 47 minutes, 1-7 to 1-4, but a well worked move finished by Brian Buckley meant Hutchings’ injury-time free would still leave Fermoy, who hit six second-half wides, 10 in total, three points shy of a more economical Aghabullogue at the full-time whistle.
